Leon Charles Smerglia

Leon Charles Smerglia, [78], of Ridgeland, South Carolina and Cleveland, Ohio passed away on December 2, 2022 peacefully overnight. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Judith Smerglia, daughter Michele, Son Leo (Kim), Siblings Alan and  Margaret Smerglia, Grand children Jacob (Bree), Gareth, Grace, Mathew, Charlie and  Megan. He will also be greatly missed by his great grandchildren Jacob and Riley. He was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Rose (nee Cataflo) Smerglia, Brother Anthony, daughter Lisa Evison, and son in law Grahame Evison.

Leo was a skilled carpenter and cabinet marker, his work was highly sought after in the 80’s and 90’s. His craftsmanship could be seen in places such as the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, The National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD, Sea World in Aurora, OH, and Tower City in Downtown Cleveland. He loved God and his family and was known for taking the family on great summer vacations. The Florida Keys and Disney World were two of his favorite vacation spots.  Leo enjoyed fishing, boating, water skiing,  snorkeling and most anything to do with marine life. Over the years, he designed and made many aquariums and kitchens for friends and his own homes. His life long hobby of collecting and educating others on the care and keeping of salt water fish made him a resource to many. A kid at heart, he loved to watch cartoons, especially Disney.  He was quick witted and had a wise crack comeback for nearly any occasion. He loved to get into a debate – which he never lost.   He was never too busy to help a friend, he was a wonderful story teller and some of them were even true. He loved his dogs and pets, and treated them like a member of the family. He always brought a smile to everyone’s face.

He was very loved and will be missed terribly. The family will receive guests on December 6, 2022 from 4-6 with a memorial service immediately following at Sauls Funeral Home of Ridgeland, 310 W Adams Street, Ridgeland, South Carolina 29936. A service in his native Ohio will be planned at a date in the near future as he will be laid to rest there.
