Lewis Craven Hughes

April 26, 1952 — January 20, 2024

Lewis Craven Hughes, 71, of Walterboro, SC peacefully entered eternal rest Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Colleton Medical Center, Walterboro, after battling a prolonged illness. Lewis was born in Walterboro on April 26, 1952. He was a loved son of the late Hugh Edward Hughes and Lois Nettles Hughes.

Lewis worked hard for his father at Hughes Construction and Utility Buildings in Ravenel, SC for over 43 years. In 2018, Lewis retired as the proud owner of the company that his father founded.

Lewis often looked back on cherished childhood memories of going to Stockyards with his Pappy. A speedy Plymouth Road Runner that he raced the roads in as a teenager still did laps in his mind!

Lewis enjoyed fishing the Combahee River, coon hunting, and caring for his beloved hounds! However, his lifelong passion was deer hunting. Not only did it put trophies on the wall and meat on the table, it put great friends at his side!

Lewis was a much-loved father. He provided the smaller things…always bringing his girls Mickey Mouse ice creams after work and pulling out his pack of Cinnamon Dentyne gum to share. He was the basketball coach in the backyard and the worthy opponent of any school principal! He proved the bigger things…he taught his daughters the love of fishing and hunting. He ingrained the important of not giving up and finishing something you started. He gave the advice that needed hearing and provided the help if it wasn’t heard. He will be missed an unmeasurable amount!

Lewis loved spending time with his grandchildren. He found so much joy in watching them grow. They always could make him laugh and sweet-talk him into almost anything! He always supported their development in important areas and anything else that he thought would make them smile. He enjoyed nighty talks with his Uncle Roy and weekly calls from his sister, Miriam.

Lewis had a comical sense of humor. He wasn’t the constant joker but he was king when it came to unexpected one-liners! He was a good friend who would do anything to help you. He thought highly of his friends and always gave an honest opinion.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Yvonne Hughes; three daughters, Michelle Gooding, Melissa Hughes, and Meggine Hughes; two brothers, Edward Hughes and Larry Hughes; two sisters, Marie Baker and Miriam Newton; extended family members, Mendell Nettles and Alene Strickland; four grandchildren, Russell Gooding, Jr., Taylor Gooding, Emma Thames, and Ella Thames.

Lewis was preceded in death by three extended family members, Charles Nettles, Marshall Nettles, and Jewel Kinard.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Sauls Funeral Home, 310 W. Adams St., Ridgeland. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Ridgeland Cemetery.
