Lloyd T. Harrell, Sr. passed away on Christmas Day in Okatie Pines, South Carolina. He was 96. Born on September 8, 1926 in National Gardens, Florida to David Etheridge and the former Louise Morris, he was one of 4 children. At the age of 16, Lloyd left high school, and volunteered for military service during World War II. He entered the Navy in 1943. During his military career, Lloyd fought at Iwo Jima, twice landing with his unit on an LST. He received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during service to our country. In 2012, Lloyd was one of 100 South Carolina World War II veterans to participate in an honor flight to Washington DC to visit the memorials constructed in their honor. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned to complete his high school education. Lloyd had a successful career in commercial financing and became Vice President of Union Capital Services Corporation of Union Trust Corp. where he worked for almost 40 years.
In 1947 Lloyd married the former Eleanor Melnychuk of Jamaica, Queens. They were married for 54 years until her death in 2001. Together they raised 6 children and took great pleasure in an abundance of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In his younger years, Lloyd was an avid golfer and was President of North Salem Golf Club.
Survivors include his six children and their spouses, 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Burial with military honors has taken place at Ivandell Cemetary in Somers, NY.
