Louis J. Salerno, age 85, died peacefully at home on December 2, 2023, a short time after receiving a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Lou is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, the former Geri Comparetta. Lou was born in Scranton, PA to the late Joseph and Angeline Guida Salerno. He graduated from Old Forge High School, attended the University of Scranton and was a veteran of the United States Navy. After his service with the Navy, he started a 37 year career with the United States Postal Service, starting as a mail sorter in Philadelphia, PA and retiring as Manager of Management Services with the National Information Systems Center in Raleigh, NC. Upon retiring, he and Geri moved to Naples, FL, and eventually settled in Sun City Hilton Head in Bluffton, SC.
In addition to his wife Geri, he is survived by his daughters Christa Merritt (Jeff) of Taylor, PA, and Jane Giordano of Scranton, PA and a sister, Rosemary Giannini (Anthony) of Hilton Head, SC. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Renee Packard, Lauren Cerase, Lynsey Coombs, William Giordano, Antonio Giordano, Salvatore Giordano, Isabella Salerno, Olivia Salerno, and Melanie Salerno. He also has six great-grandchildren. In addition, he is also survived by his brother-in-law, Guy Comparetta (Sandra) and niece Cara Affayroux (Kristopher) and many cousins and dear friends. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa, and a sister Loretta Spivack (deceased – Peter), and nephews Craig Comparetta and Christopher Giannini.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church at 10:30 AM, Friday, January 5, 2024 (31 Saint Gregory Drive, Bluffton, SC). The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
His cremated remains will be privately inurned with his predeceased daughter at Old Forge Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
