Marc E. Lorberbaum

Marc Edward Lorberbaum, 75, of Bluffton, South Carolina, passed away at home on May 7, 2026. Born on March 21, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, Marc was the only child of Nathan and Betty Lorberbaum. He grew up in Flushing, Queens, alongside his parents and grandparents, and at the age of five, he made the request that would shape the rest of his life: he asked for a piano. Classically trained from boyhood, Marc would go on to become a prolific rock pianist, drawn early and irreversibly to the Beatles, the Hammond B organ, and the musicians of Woodstock. In New York, he and four of his closest friends formed The Third Rail and later Powder Blue. Music never left him. Over the decades he played in bands in Dallas, and in his Hilton Head years, he could be found behind the keys of Vinyl on Fire and Vinylocity, still chasing the same sound that lit him up as a teenager.

A free spirit at heart, Marc moved from New York to Greensboro, North Carolina, to Fort Worth, Texas, to Hilton Head, and finally to Bluffton, South Carolina. Thrice married, Marc and his second wife Debra Hill raised two children together, Ross Eric and Paige Nichole, both of whom inherited his musical gifts. Marc championed their talents with all the pride and intensity he brought to everything he loved. A successful life-long career in agricultural and chemical sales sent him around the world with colleagues who became some of his closest friends.

He was a man of many talents and interests who never stopped looking for the next great moment. Whether spinning a big, outlandish story, settling into a ballad on the piano, or hosting friends and family on the boat, he was happiest with an audience and a moment of excitement on the horizon. In addition to his passion for performance, he was also an avid scuba diver and solo boater. He liked to think of himself as a fisherman, though he rarely caught one (patience was never his strong suit) but the time he spent on and in the water mattered to him deeply. Whether test driving a new car or taking one his various motorcycles out for a ride, his love of all things with an engine ran straight through to the end.

Marc is survived by his son Ross and Ross’s wife Linh, along with their four children Addy, Bryson, Emerson, and Greyson, and by his daughter Paige. He was deeply loved and he will be deeply missed.
