Marcella Barrett Murden

Marcella Barrett Murden age 89 of Sun City Hilton passed away peacefully on January 20, 2022  while in the tender care Beaufort Memorial Hospital at Bluffton, SC. Marcella (Marci) was born on January 14, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri as the 3 rd of six siblings to William and Agnes Barrett. The family later moved to Omaha Nebraska where she spent much of her childhood. She graduated from Kapaun Mount Carmel Catholic High School in Wichita, Kansas a girl’s boarding school at that time. She went on to complete her college studies and law school in Los Angeles, California. While employed as a grade schoolteacher both in Chicago and Los Angeles she completed her law school studies and went on to practice law in Los Angeles for the next thirty years. During this period, she met and married her husband of 25 years Raymond Murden who was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and retired as a Lt Col. US Airforce. Upon her retirement they moved to Sun City in Bluffton where they built their home and lived for the next 18 years. Marcella was preceded in death by her husband who died on November 15, 2018, as well as her sisters Mary Ann Smith and Martha Barrett and brother William Barrett II. She is survived by her two brothers James Edward Barrett of Omaha Nebraska and Dr. G. Vincent Barrett of Elephant Butte, New Mexico as well as her stepdaughter Jean McNeil of Atlanta and stepson Michael Murden of Dahlonega, Georgia.

Marcella was known for her love of books, cooking and legal opinions. She will also be fondly remembered by her many nephews and nieces and their children as well. She will also be fondly remembered by her loving friends that thought of her and her husband Ray as family and treated them as such. Marcella was a parishioner of and faithfully attended mass at St Gregory Catholic Church in Bluffton, SC until she was no longer able to do so. She will be remembered by all who knew her in the Bluffton community for her warmth and shy humor.

A memorial mass will be given at Saint Gregory The Great Catholic Church at a date to be announced as well as a small family service for her inurnment in Omaha, Nebraska.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Saint Gregory The Great Catholic Church “Visit the Sick Program” Bluffton, SC.
