Margaret Foster Curtis

d. January 29, 2016

Margaret Foster Curtis (78) peacefully passed away on January 29, 2016 at Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, SC surrounded by her family. Family, faith, service and community formed the cornerstones of her life. Margaret was most happy surrounded by her children and family. She thrived in the chaos and delighted in hosting family, friends, neighbors, dogs, cats and any other strays for gatherings of any kind. She enjoyed organizing and preparing large fabulous meals then retreating to the porch to tell loud stories and laugh long into the day and evening. Margaret’s dedication to helping others was demonstrated in the way she shaped her professional and personal life. Her outreach included providing healthcare on mission trips to Haiti, working with a relief group following Hurricane Andrew, coordinating care and volunteering at the Columbia Free Medical Clinic, and even founding the Food Closet of Ridgeland in her late retirement. After 30 years as a nurse, Margaret completed two Master’s Degrees. She was thrilled to be a Nurse Practitioner running her own small-town practice, Family Healthcare of Ridgeland. She tried never to turn a patient away and sometimes a heartfelt “thank you” was accepted in return for services provided. On Sundays, Margaret could be found at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. She enjoyed being active in all parts of the church especially the holiday programs. Her faith provided her tremendous comfort and strength throughout her life. She was daughter of John Cantzon and Margaret Hayne Foster of Columbia and after their passing was adopted by Dr. James A. and Lorraine Hayne of Hampton. She is survived by her children and spouses: Richard (Lisa) Curtis, John (Laura) Curtis, Daisy (Jeff) Jones, and Drew (Julia) Robb and their father R. Churchill Curtis; 6 grandchildren, Jay Curtis, Lee Curtis, Andrew Robb, Evan Robb, Jenn Curtis, and Maggie Jones. She is also survived by a brother, Captain John C. Foster, USN, Retired and Mrs. Joye Foster and a sister Mary P. “Bitsy” Foster. Services will be held at 9:30 on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 2718 Bees Creek Rd, Ridgeland, SC 29936. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 at St. John’s Congaree, 1151 Elm Savannah Rd, Hopkins, SC 29061.
