Margaret Elizabeth Molesworth – July 8, 1935 – February 25, 2022
A Fabulous Companion.
Margaret Elizabeth Molesworth, a creative, loving woman with a remarkably keen wit, passed away on February 25 in Beaufort, South Carolina. Born in Altrincham, England, to Margaret Gold Robertson and George Thomas Alexander Hastings (aka “Gorgeous”). Margaret was among the many British youngsters who experienced the long train rides to Scotland during World War II in order to attend school in a safer location. Margaret graduated from the Beacon School for Girls and went on to become a State Registered Nurse in the United Kingdom.
Margaret loved traveling and in 2018 realized her goal of revisiting many of her favorite places in Scotland with her daughters and granddaughter. An avid reader, Margaret loved books of all types. She could speak authoritatively on subjects from gardening to ancient bookbinding to zoology, and especially Tennis, of which she was an avid fan. Margaret was an excellent baker and cook; her shortbread and chestnut soup were unmatched, although her turkey once was chalky.
The Sun City Table Tennis Club was the beneficiary of Margaret’s extraordinary organizational skills. Margaret served as social activities director and planned many enjoyable table tennis events.
Margaret is survived by her husband of 64 glorious years, Richard Mark Nassau. Margaret and Mark were married by Mark’s father, an Anglican priest, at the Church in Northam, Devon, in the southwest of England.
Margaret’s adaptability was evident in her willingness to follow Mark’s career, first to the United States, then to India and back to the US, where they settled for good and endured many long road trips in a station wagon packed full of rambunctious kids. Margaret and Mark enjoyed many happy years at Sun City in Bluffton, South Carolina. Margaret’s adventurous spirit allowed her to love wherever she was; always getting involved in local activities and charity efforts.
Margaret was the loving Mum to six: Jennifer, Philip, Richard, John, William and Elizabeth (and Woody too!). They always knew where she was. Margaret was Granny to seven: Kestrel, Duncan, Tara, Patrick, Alec, Michael and Matthew, to whom she sent many of her homemade and hand-decorated cards. Margaret was Great Granny to Wiley and Rowan. She was the very fun mother-in-law to Paul, Rhonda, Rita and Cindy. A lover of animals, Margaret was canine captain of Butch, Fred, Robby, Gordy, Max, Russ, Dina, and Charlie the cat.
Margaret was predeceased by her brother, David “Nunc” Hastings. In addition to her immediate family, Margaret is survived by an extended family that stretches from the British Isles to New Zealand. She and Mark enjoyed their regular calls with Raphael and Duncan from down under.
In accordance with her wishes, Margaret will be cremated and her two titanium hips and two titanium knees will be donated and recycled.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local volunteer ambulance corp.
Mark’s reflections on Margaret: “Margaret was good at handling stress – like when the power goes out on a holiday or when a son’s leg comes through the ceiling just above the turkey on Thanksgiving. She took it all in stride. Never a crisis that she couldn’t handle. A bloody good wife. A fabulous companion.”
