Margaret Louise Clark Scott passed peacefully in Bluffton, SC on July 1. A beloved mother, sister, daughter, wife, aunt, and friend, she will be remembered for many things but the common threads are her love of God and family and her wicked sense of humor. Margie as she was known, was born in Prince George’s County, MD when her father, Leslie (Les) Clark was a machinist at the Naval Yard. Her mother Ruth Lorton Clark raised two older boys, Robert Lorton and Gene Edward before Margaret entered the picture.
The family were Southern Baptists and church was an important part of life. When they returned to their hometown of Somerset, Ky they joined High Street Baptist and lived in a house with a chicken coop near Les’ brothers and sisters. Little brother, John Duane was born when Marge was age 9 and he often says she was like a mother while their mother, Ruth worked.
Marge had three children, “Cathy, Eddie and Jeff” as they were known at the time. All born in Indianapolis, IN. Catherine now in Philadelphia, has one daughter Alexandra Lorton (Dillon Jason) Pruitt, and their son and Marge’s great grandson, Christopher James Pruitt, in Columbia, SC. Ed Scott and his fiancé Bladen reside in Raleigh, NC. Marge’s youngest son, Jeff Scott lives near Phoenix, AZ.
When the kids became adults, Marge worked as an Executive Assistant at William’s Research in Walled Lake, MI where she met her husband, Richard Breitenbeck. Dick and Marge later moved to Gainesville, GA and later Daphne, AL near Mobile where Dick worked for Teledyne and Marge was the Executive Assistant to the Mayor.
Marge was always close to her beloved brothers-the late Robert (Debbie) Clark of Butler, KY; and the late Gene Clark of Ferguson, Ky and John D (Judith) Clark of Bluffton, SC. Marge loved and enjoyed her nieces Dee (Bartie) Woods and their children Tommy (Melinda) and Taylor, Jack, and Jayson. Angie (Duane) Harbison, and their children Joshua and (Chas) and Bob’s daughters, Nila (Daryle) and her three children, Devin (Phillip); Mark (Cierra) and Bobby; and Julie (Chris) Gifford.
Marge’s was a life well-lived. Her expectations for travel and new experiences were exceeded, and she was always ready to support her children, a family member, neighbor, or friend. She often said a person’s most important quality was kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held with family and close friends at Bloom at Belfair on Saturday, July 20 at 11:00am.
