Margaret V. Webster Roller

July 3, 1915 — January 21, 2008

Margaret Webster Roller, 92, died at her home on the May River south of Bluffton on Monday evening after a long illness. Mrs. Roller, widow of the late Wilbert Roller, Sr., was born July 3, 1915 in Bennettsville, South Carolina to Ebby Webster and Emma Jane Scarborough Webster. She was married to Wilbert Roller, Sr. until his death in 1983. Mr. and Mrs. Roller owned the DeSota Truck Stop on Ogeechee Road in Port Wentworth in the early 1950s. In addition to keeping the books for the family business Mrs. Roller also owned and ran a small restaurant next to the Truck Stop. After selling the business in Port Wentworth, the Rollers moved to Hilton Head Island in 1959 at a time when the Island was still largely undeveloped. The Rollers established a service station, a Texaco distributorship and the Roller Bottle Shop and became an important part of the Island?s business community. In fact, during the early days of development before a bank was on the Island the Roller Bottle Shop frequently took on the role of a quasi-bank where checks were cashed and gap loans were made to some of the prominent, early developers. Along with the Frasers, the Hacks, the MacIntoshes and many of the other founders of modern day Hilton Head, Mr. and Mrs. Roller played a very large role in helping build the foundation of Hilton Head Island community. They were also very supportive of the Hilton Head Hospital, the schools and many of the other charities on the Island and in Bluffton. After Mr. Roller?s death in 1983 Mrs. Roller moved into a home that Mr. Roller had built for her on the May River south of Bluffton where she resided until her death. Mrs. Roller is pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, 4 sisters, 1 brother, 1 grandchild and 1 great-grandchild. She is survived by 3 children: Peggy Roller Enslow (Raymond), Virginia Roller McGraw and Wilbert Roller, Jr. (Jenny).
