Mark S. Anderson

Mark Steven Anderson, 71, of Bluffton, SC passed away June 26, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital in Savannah, GA.

Mark was born January 29, 1954 in Roanoke, VA to the late William Anderson and Carol Schweer Anderson. He graduated from Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, IL. He then attended Wayne State College in Nebraska on a football scholarship. During his college tenure, Mark was a four-year football letterman, Co-Captain of the football team during his senior year, an Honorable Mention All-American Center during his senior year, and served as President of the Wayne State Lettermen’s Club.  He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1976.

Following college graduation, Mark taught Physical Education and Driver’s Education, and also served as the coach for football and track at Blair Community Schools in Nebraska for four years. He then began a 40+ year career in the insurance claim field as a field adjuster, later retiring as Vice President.

Mark and Shelley married on November 27, 1976. They lived in Norfolk, NE, Omaha, NE, and Naperville, IL before retiring to the Bluffton and Hilton Head area in 2017. Mark and Shelley joined the Spanish Wells community in 2018. They enjoyed the beautiful golf course, social functions, and many great friends they met while residing there.

Mark loved freshwater fishing. He traveled to Canada, Brazil and Mexico, chasing big fish! He also loved golf—so much so, he worked five years at Palmetto Dunes, Robert Trent Jones course, as a starter and ranger.

Some people might say that Mark had an unlucky break with cancer, but Mark would tell you that he had a wonderful and successful life with many good friends and neighbors. Mark had a great dog, Bella, a great wife of 49 years and caregiver, Shelley, and a great daughter, Taylor.

“When you hit a slice or go out of bounds, don’t worry about losing your ball, as you will probably find one of Mark’s bad shots, when looking for your ball!”

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at Lowcountry Community Church, 801 Buckwalter Pkwy, Bluffton.
