Martin Schatz

August 1, 1936 — April 28, 2021

Martin Schatz, Bluffton, SC, age 84, passed away on April 28, 2021. Marty was born on August 1, 1936 in The Bronx, NY to Murray and Florence (Hollander) Schatz and older sister Marion. Marty was a quarterback at Monroe High School in The Bronx and earned the Lou Gehrig Award for Sportsmanship and Courage. His love of football took Marty to the University of Alabama to pursue his undergraduate studies. Roll Tide! Marty graduated from the Alabama School of Engineering in 1959. Marty then worked as a research engineer in Boston for four years before returning to the South. Marty attended the University of Florida School of Business and earned his MBA in 1965. Go Gators! Marty then returned to Alabama where he worked for Boeing on the Saturn V Rocket. In pursuit of more knowledge, Marty traveled back to New York where he earned a PhD in Management from NYU’s Graduate School of Business in 1972. While at NYU, Marty was President of the Graduate Student Body and helped create the First Earth Day Event in NYC.

During his time at NYU, Marty met Harriet Marsha (Cohen) Schatz at a club. They married on June 26, 1970 at City Hall. This past year Marty & Harriet celebrated 50 years of marriage. With Harriet at his side, Marty held several positions as faculty and administration at New York University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Adelphi University, SUNY-Utica School of Technology and the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College. As Dean of Crummer, Marty’s endeavors helped the school become accredited and ranked as the #1 Graduate Business School in the South. During his 21 years on the picturesque Rollins College campus, Marty (Dean Emeritus and Professor of Management) authored The MBA Guidebook: The Authoritative Guide to MBA Programs.

Marty is survived by his loving wife Harriet, his daughters Karen and Lauren along with his son-in-law Evan and two grandsons Ezekiel and Emmitt. Marty was a man of integrity and the positive impact he had on those that knew him will be his legacy. Marty will be deeply missed by his family and friends, including his sister-in-law Eileen and her husband Jimmy and Marty’s nephew and niece Scott and Stacey along with their families.
