Mary Ruth Carter Tremitiere died on April 2nd, at the Ridgeland Nursing Center in Ridgeland, SC. She was 101 years old. Born in Burlington, New Jersey on January 12, 1914, Ruth spent her youth in the Trenton area, where she attended Trenton High School and Trenton State Teachers College. Mrs. Tremitiere was the daughter of William B. Carter and Caroline M. Bartle. She had two sisters and one brother, all deceased, Helen, Jeanette and George.
She married Charles Tremitiere in 1935 and they were preparing to celebrate their 68th wedding anniversary, when he passed in 2002. She is survived by two sons: William of St. Helena Island, SC and Lawrence and his wife Joan of Hardeeville, SC. In addition she is survived by her brother-in-law, Joseph Tremitiere, of Duxbury, MA, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and four nieces and five nephews.
Ruth and "Charlie" initially lived in Trenton, NJ, but over the years, resided in Rochester, NY, Morrisville and York, PA, Pittsburgh, PA, Bradenton, FL., Spartanburg and Rock Hill, SC. For the past five years, Mrs. Tremitiere resided in Bluffton, SC.
Mrs. Tremitiere will be remembered for her deep devotion to her family and friends. She made lasting friendships wherever she lived, and was a strong "thread" between all branches of the family. She was an excellent writer and a creative artist. She had been a member of The Eastern Star and, most recently, a member of Low Country Presbyterian Church in Bluffton.
A memorial service will be held for her at 11:00 AM, April 24 at Low Country Presbyterian Church, 10 Simmonsville Rd. and Hwy 278, Bluffton, SC. In lieu of flowers, family has requested that any donations be made in her name to Advantage Hospice, P. O. Box 161, N. Jacob Smart Blvd., Ridgeland, SC 29936
