Mary Jane Haines

February 2, 1926 — October 17, 2023

Mary Jane Haines 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in Bluffton, SC. She was predeceased in death by her husband, David William Haines and son, David Kimmel Haines.

After spending the first 40 years of her life in Columbus, Findlay, and Worthington, OH she and Dave moved to Charleston, WV where they were active golfers at Kanawha Country Club and later enjoyed endless hours  boating on the Funny Girl with the Kanawha Boat Club and Greater Kanawha River Navy. They loved their river friends and spent most summer weekends on group excursions to OH, KY and the ultimate boating trip to the 1984 New Orleans World Fair.

In the 1970’s Mary demonstrated her passion for nurturing young children by teaching at First Presbyterian Church pre-school in Charleston and later running a nursery from home. After her husband’s death she moved to Sebring, FL and later Hilton Head, SC.

Mary was known for her endless energy, positivity, creativity, and beautiful smile. She could not sit still when the music started playing, and her singing, dancing and harmonica skills were legend.

She is survived by daughter, Melea Brotherton (Michael Cole) of Bluffton SC; grandchildren Brett (Amy) Haines of Portage MI, Tracy (James) Koehler of Findlay OH, and Aaron (Hillary) Brotherton of Camas, WA; great grandchildren Audrey Haines, Mitchell Haines, James Koehler, Katarina Koehler, Jane Brotherton and William Brotherton. A private family service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, with Father Kim Webster, St. Matthews Episcopal Church, officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband.

In her memory, please hug a child, sing a song or dance with reckless abandon. She will be missed.
