Mary Linda (Lafaso) Sweeney

December 30, 1944 — December 18, 2023

(Mary) Linda Sweeney, a devoted and cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and godmother, peacefully departed this life with her son at her side on December 18, 2023. Linda valiantly fought a debilitating and incurable lung disease for years, leaving behind a legacy of boundless love.

Born on December 30, 1944, in Erie, PA, Linda was the beloved daughter of Anne Catherine and Santo Antonio LaFaso, and sister to Patricia and Catherine (both deceased). She was raised in Interlaken, NJ where her love for the ocean blossomed. During these formative years, she not only discovered the joy of coastal living but also developed a passion for swimming in the ocean. Linda also called Verona NJ, Short Hills NJ, Harding Township NJ, Torrington CT, Palm Beach FL, and Bluffton SC, home throughout her extraordinary life.

Known for her beauty, grace, intellect, humor, and remarkable vocabulary, Linda remained young at heart. Having grown up on the Jersey Shore, her affinity for the beach endured, and she found solace in later years through peaceful strolls along the shores of Palm Beach. Her musical preferences spanned an era of greatness, with a special affection for artists like Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, Elton John, Carly Simon, Carole King, and, most notably, Rod Stewart.

While raising her two sons, Linda enjoyed a successful career as the EVP of the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce, passionately supporting the needs of local businesses. She also played a vital role as a leader with the Essex County branch of CASA, advocating for the welfare of children facing adversity. Linda further demonstrated her commitment to community well-being as the Vice President of Montclair Community Hospital. Linda's greatest love was undoubtedly her family. The mention of any family member would instantly light up her face. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey, daughter-in-law Kimberly, and their three children, Ryan, Jake, and Dylan. In remembrance, we also honor Linda’s departed son, Gregory, and his son Nicholas, who both left us too soon. Like his mother, Gregory cherished his family. Linda is survived by Gregory's wife, Laura, and grandchildren Samantha, Hope, Jessica, Taylor, and Gianna, and two great-grandchildren, Dominic and Bryce. Linda is also survived by her three beloved nieces, Debbie, Lisa, and Kristin, and two nephews, Scott and Joe.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 27th, at the Church of Saint Anselm. The service will be followed by a celebration of her life at The Stella Marina Restaurant starting at 12:30 PM. Please RSVP at jsweeney321@gmail.com.

As we bid farewell to Linda, let us remember the joy she brought into our lives and the love she shared with all who knew her. In celebrating her memory, may we find solace in the cherished moments and the legacy of love she leaves behind.
