Maurice Sherrill Hawkins, 91, of Ridgeland, SC formerly of Glen Allen, VA passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2023. Also known as "Hawk."
He was born September 11, 1932, in Cobb County, Georgia to the late Charles Gordon Hawkins and Bertie Sherrill Hawkins. He was the youngest of 5 children. He grew up on the family farm near Noon Day Creek on the Canton Highway.
He began his work career as a lineman for Bell South. He then went to work for Federated Mutual Insurance Company as a claims adjuster in the Atlanta office and made career moves to Macon, GA, Memphis, TN, Nashville, TN and Richmond, VA. He retired from Federated as a Claims Manager in the Richmond, VA office. Early in his career he graduated from Atlanta Law School. While at Federated he earned his Bachelor of Laws Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter which he considered his proudest career accomplishment.
Maurice served in the Naval Air Reserves for 12 years stationed at the Naval Air Station in Marietta. His rank upon discharge was 3rd Class Petty Officer.
His proudest family moments were the births of his three daughters, Leslie, Terri, and Kendra.
Maurice was active in his church choirs and served as a Sunday School teacher in many areas. He and Charlene were members of the Celebration Singers for 20 years in Richmond, VA.
He was a member of Hunton Baptist Church in Glen Allen, VA where he was active in the Men's Sunday School Class and the Men's Tuesday Night Bible Study. He was also a member of the Richmond Navy League.
He had many hobbies including piddling in his workshop, gardening, camping, feeding the birds, and trains - both model trains and steam engines. While he and Charlene had many dogs and cats, his most beloved dogs were his boxers - Otto, Rusty and Noah.
He is survived by his three daughters, Leslie (Scott) Vaigneur, Terri (Cris) Harris, and Kendra (Patrick) Thomas and his grandchildren, Anne Kibler, Jack Thomas, Carter Thomas, Matthew Harris and Blair Astoria. He is also survived by 6 great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Wyatt, Rhett, Holt, Hank, and Ryan. He is also survived by his trusty companion, Noah.
Maurice was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene P. Hawkins, his father and mother, Charles G. and Bertie Sherrill Hawkins, his brothers, Gordon Hawkins and Lanier Hawkins, his sisters, Elizabeth Lance and Charlotte Ruff and one granddaughter, Meg Smith.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Coosawhatchie Baptist Church, Coosawhatchie, SC.
