MICHAEL DAVID SEGGIE ( Mike)

Born in Krugersdorp South Africa.

Lived in South Africa, Zambia (Northern Rhodesia), Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), USA

Mike was our family’s foundation stone.

He was a deeply religious man and the church was extremely important to him. He was at various stages very involved in church and charity work, especially in the small towns and farming communities in Zimbabwe. Church was always part of the weekend and during the COVID pandemic he and Di would attend services being broadcast on television at their home. At various stages of his life and in the many small communities he lived in, Mike was an important part of the local church often as alter server, reader and any other part he was needed, many times all of the above. Mike was always available to help the church and its charity work and often the Priest was invited over for meals at the house.

Mike was a force. He was quiet and understated but achieved much, mostly out of the limelight and away from accolade. Mike was a charming man and a gentleman. He was the consummate host and his guests were always well taken care of. He was a quietly spoken man and his words were carefully chosen. His council was often requested and when it was offered it was measured, well considered and insightful. His sense of humor was never far away and was often at his own expense.

He filled his life with new experiences. At 18 years old, not able financially to attend university, he became a delivery boy in the bank. Over the years he rose through the ranks and became the manager of one of the largest banks in Zimbabwe. He took a few years off from the bank early on to drive a bulldozer during the construction of the road between the then Congo and Northern Rhodesia. It paid better and he was able to help his family financially during this time.

In 1962 Mike married Di after a whirlwind romance, they were engaged after 2 weeks of knowing each other. The confirmed bachelor in his thirty s had found his person. They were married for almost 59 years. They had 2 children and 3 grandchildren. Family was so important to Mike and he gave us all the opportunity to succeed. Diana was able to continue to play international field hockey, his children were educated at a top school and both children were able to attend university becoming a Pharmacist and Doctor respectively. He made sure that his children were given opportunities which circumstance prevented him from having.

When he retired from banking in Zimbabwe, he moved with his family to South Africa and continued to work in the local government roads dept. His move to the United States in 1988 meant working with a property developer and as a realtor. After their move to South Carolina, Mike worked at a local golf course and finally stopped working at the age of 90. These many varied work experiences gave Mike a unique insight into the world around him. He was an interesting man and when he was a part of any conversation he often added little anecdotes from his life experiences.

We will forever remember those Piercing blue/green eyes and the charming Gentleman that was Mike Seggie.
