In the early hours of Thursday, November 24, 2022, Murray Charles Turka passed away at age 94. Murray is survived by his son, Laurence Turka, his daughter-in-law Barbara Weber, his brother-in-law Joseph Eisenberg, and his grandchildren Joshua Turka and Alison Turka.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Murray was a fervent Brooklyn Dodgers fan, shifting his allegiance to the Mets when the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1948, and served in the army from 1950-1952 as a corporal, specializing in information and education. Other than during his military service, Murray lived in the New York Metropolitan Area for 82 years where he worked in sales, and most recently in the food importing business, until he retired at age 70. Murray met his late wife, Mona (1930-2012), in 1953 when Murray worked at Stern's department store and they were introduced by a mutual friend. They married one year later and moved to Poughkeepsie NY in 1960 where they raised their son.
In 2010, after braving decades of winters in the Northeast, Murray and Mona relocated to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to revel in year-round warm weather and be nearer to Mona's brother Joe. Murray was fortunate to enjoy 12 years of island life in Hilton Head and, as was his nature, made friends truly everywhere he went. Murray most recently made The Bayshore his home and will be greatly missed by all of its staff and residents.
Murray was known for his sense of humor, independence, and love of travel – but above all, for his devotion to Mona, to whom he was married for 58 years.
Murray will be buried next to Mona in Low Country Memorial Gardens, Bluffton, SC.
