Pauline Calvo De Jong

Pauline Calvo De Jong, age 79, of Bluffton, SC died Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at NHC Healthcare of Bluffton.

Pauline was born on April 19, 1939 in Barrigada, Guam, the daughter of the late Ana Castro Calvo and Vincente Perez Calvo. She was a graduate of Ladycliff College in New York where she earned a degree in English Literature. Following her formal education she began her career in teaching in Washington, DC, later in northern California, and in Guam. While living back in Guam she met Jack De Jong on a blind date and they later married in 1967. She continued teaching in various cities in the Midwest as Jack’s career progressed, but ultimately retired to care for her family. She was always active with her church and would volunteer in different committees to help contribute to the church’s growth. Outside of work and civic involvement, she was an avid Mahjong player and was a passionate reader.

Pauline was preceded in death by her sister, Julia Smith; and brothers-in-law, Gerald Smith and the Honorable Judge Cristobal C. Dueñas. She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, John C. “Jack” De Jong; daughters, Colleen Berliner (Jay F.) and Jessica De Jong; sister, Juanita Calvo Dueñas; grandsons, Jonathan and Nicholas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Guam and stateside.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 3, 2018 at St. Andrew Chapel, 220 Pinckney Colony Road, Bluffton, SC 29910.

Additionally, a novena of memorial masses are offered beginning Saturday, July 28 to Sunday, August 5, 2018 at the Agana Cathedral Basilica at 5:45am.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 31 Saint Gregory Drive, Bluffton, SC 29909.
