Peter Melville Lauer, born September 13, 1943, in Huntington, New York, passed away on June 29th, 2026. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Pete grew up in Commack, New York. He graduated from Hauppauge High School in 1961. In school he was a track and field athlete, running cross country events. After high school, Pete served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Peter later earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Hofstra University and a Master of Public Administration from University of Oklahoma.
Pete met his wife, Ginny, in the Hamptons in the summer of ’69. They married on August 8th, 1970. Pete was a devoted husband and dedicated father to their two children, Chris and Eileen. Pete played an important role in the life of his grandson, Sean, and was an amazing grandfather. Pete’s love, guidance, and unwavering support will always be remembered.
Pete worked in higher education administration in various roles for many years. Pete finished his career working as Chief Financial Officer for the Sisters of the Humility of Mary in Pulaski, Pennsylvania, before his retirement in 2005. Pete also had his own business, Computer Financial Modeling Workshops, and traveled the country until the age of 70 sharing his five-year budget model with many colleges and universities.
Pete and Ginny spent their retirement in Bluffton, South Carolina. Pete was an accomplished Masters swimmer, winning countless medals throughout his swimming years, which spanned from 1980 until well into his retirement. Photography was another of Pete’s passions. He loved taking photos of nature in the Lowcountry. Pete and Ginny adventured throughout North America in their retirement with their RV, creating wonderful memories and capturing beautiful photos. Some of Pete’s proudest achievements were the awards he received from his friends in the Sun City Photography Club, especially Photo of the Year. Pete also greatly enjoyed taking his family on cruises around the world. Another of Pete’s beloved pastimes was playing golf with Ginny and teaching his grandson, Sean, to golf.
Peter is survived by his wife, Virginia Lauer, of Bluffton; son, Christopher Lauer, of Maryland; daughter, Eileen Lauer, of Bluffton; brother, Paul (Edna) Lauer, of Florida; twin sister, Judy Losi, of Florida; brother, Robin (Jackie) Lauer, of Maine; grandson, Sean Reitnauer, of Bluffton; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his father, Charles Lauer; mother, Frances (nee Lamberson) Lauer; and brother-in-law, Richard Losi.
