Peter Clay Ryan

Peter Clay Ryan, age 76, of Bluffton, SC, and formerly of Westfield, NJ, died peacefully at home on Monday, January 8, 2018. Mr. Ryan was born on July 29, 1941, in Hyannis, MA, the son of the late Francis and Helen MacCargar Ryan. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and after completing his military tenure, Peter attended Bloomfield College where he earned a degree in English. Following his formal education, he began his career in sales with Allied Chemical in New York City. He later worked with Givaudan where he retired after many years of service. While living in New Jersey, he was a member of the Echo Lake Country Club and was a member of the Colleton River Club in Bluffton, SC. He enjoyed boating, golf, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Ryan was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Ryan and daughter, Jennifer A. Ryan. He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Carol L. McHugh Ryan; daughter, Allison P. Gaffney (Brian); stepdaughters, Erin E. Babcock (Chase) and Cara K. Pheiffer (William); brother, Douglas Ryan (Jane); and grandchildren, Brendan and Matthew Gaffney. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 12, 2018, at Grace Community Church, 450 Spanish Wells Road, Hilton Head, SC, 29926.
