Phyllis M. Martin, 92, of Bluffton, SC, died Sunday, December 1, 2024. She was born on October 11, 1932 the third daughter of the late Morris and Carrie Tressler Wastler. Phyllis was married to the late Herbert F. Martin, her one true love, for over 72 years. While home on leave in 1951, Herb and Phyllis met and married after a whirlwind two week courtship. Phyllis always supported Herb in his career and worked a wide variety of jobs wherever Herb was transferred. Such as a nurse’s aide on the maternity floor in Honesdale, PA; a physical therapy assistant in Grand Island, NY and a retail sales associate at Woodloch Pines gift shop, Hawley, PA to name a few.
Phyllis and Herb were active members of St. Andrew’s by the Sea Methodist Church, Hilton Head, SC. Phyllis enjoyed reading, playing piano, golf and had a special passion and talent for writing poetry. She assembled these verses in a notebook for her children titled “A Legacy of Lines.”
Our mom loved babies and children as she had a maternal, nurturing spirit. In a rocking chair holding a baby was one of her favorite places.
Surviving are her children, daughter, Melanie E. Davis, Bluffton, SC; son Jeffery H. Martin, Hilton Head, SC; daughter, Dawn M. Troxell, wife of Dr. Gary L. Troxell, Ephrata, PA. Grandchildren Jessica Marie Rudmin (Hans), Pittsburgh, PA; Ryan Martin Davis, Bluffton, SC; Amy Dawn VanNewkirk (Rick), Pittsburgh, PA and Jeffrey Michael Davis, San Jose, CA. Great Grandchildren Jack Herbert Rudmin and Wendell Joseph Rudmin, Pittsburgh, PA.
Phyllis is survived by a brother Wayne Wastler (Carolyn) Thurmont, MD; sisters Edith Wastler (Richard deceased) Hilton Head, SC; Bonnie Nikirk (Glenn deceased) Thurmont, MD; Lois R. Wastler, Hilton Head, SC. Brother-in-laws, Kenneth Martin (Phyllis, deceased); Taneytown, MD and Odale Martin (Connie, deceased) Lewistown, MD.
Graveside service will be held at Blue Ridge Cemetery, Altamont Ave, Thurmont, MD on Friday, January 24th, at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Mom, you always told us how much you wanted to be a mother since you were a little girl. We were very blessed that God chose the three of us as your children.
