Phyllis Anne (Sawhill) Janocha

Phyllis Anne Sawhill Janocha, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2022 at the age of 93 in Bluffton, SC.  She had been a long-time resident and active community member of Rosslyn Farms where she and her husband lived for more than 50 years and raised five children.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her husband, Frank J. Janocha, her parents, Robert and Lucile Sawhill, her brothers, Robert and David Sawhill and her grandson, Ben Gergerich.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished by her children, Karen Walker (Jim), Jay Janocha, Priscilla Bauer (Gary), Stephen Janocha (Debbie) and Amy Janocha as well as her fourteen grandchildren and seven great grands.  She is lovingly remembered by her brother, John Sawhill and many nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues,coworkers, and friends.

Phyllis was a graduate of Carnegie High School and earned her BSN from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. She worked at Carlynton School District as an elementary school nurse and ended her paid career at the high school. Phyllis was an American Red Cross Disaster Services volunteer for more than 37 years, serving every major type of disaster, locally, and nationally. She was awarded the very prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal, an international nursing award in 2002. Phyllis was also a treasured volunteer at Global Links.

Phyllis loved reading, traveling, knitting, volunteering, and being with her family. The greatest passion she held was helping others in her Red Cross disaster days.

A celebration of Phyllis’ life and service will be held on Saturday, September 24th at the Pittsburgh Cremation and Funeral Care 5405 Steubenville Pike, McKees Rocks, Pa. 15136.  Family will be receiving guests from 1-5 with a service at 3:00. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in their mother’s honor be sent to the American Red Cross or Global Links .
