Raymond Dudley

Raymond L. Dudley, 85, passed away suddenly at home September 17, 2026 with his wife and partner, Elaine (Lainey) Smith, by his side. Raymond believed “To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with” and throughout their 50 year journey together they fulfilled that belief.

Born on July 11, 1941 he was the youngest son of Joseph and Helen (Szymanski) Dudley.

Growing up on the beaches and backwoods of Waterford Ct, Raymond’s love of nature and all of its inhabitants was a defining part of his character.

After graduation from New London High School, Raymond enlisted in the United States Navy.

Trained as an electronics technician, he was part of an elite group stationed with the newly formed Polaris Program in Holy Loch Scotland.

Raymond held many and varied positions in his lifetime including ownership of a bookstore in downtown New London Ct called Burn-A-Book. The name came from Walt Kelly’s comic strip POGO “There’s nothing quite so lovely as a brightly burning book”.

A lifelong passionate reader from childhood - EC Comics to Doonesbury and Calvin and Hobbes, sci-fi, classics, history, politics and current events, he was always learning, acquiring new skills and knowledge.

In 1973 Raymond began work on what would become his signature achievement - The Dudley Chess Machine - an innovative parallel processing computer far ahead of its time resulting in the issuance of US Patent 4,391,447 in 1983.

Raymond’s profound sense of justice and unwavering commitment to helping others were his guiding principles. Fiercely loyal to family and friends, he will be remembered for his quick witted repartee, charming and funny manner and his love for all creatures.

As Jane Goodall said:

“There is still so much in the world worth fighting for. So much that is beautiful.”

Raymond’s indomitable spirit kept him going forward. His life and work made a difference for those around him and the world.

His presence will be profoundly missed.

“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile” Albert Einstein

Donations in his memory may be made to Palmetto Animal League and the Hilton Head Humane Society.

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a future date.
