Raymond "Reade" Reade Murray

February 10, 1935 — August 31, 2022

My Sweetheart, Raymond “READE” Murray, passed away on August 31, 2022, at the age of 87.  He was born February 10, 1935, Raleigh, NC.

In 1942, his family moved to Monroe, NC, where he attended school until he was 17. He then returned back to Raleigh with his family.  At age 20, he proudly entered the Army in 1955 and soon after decided to make it a career.  In 1963, he was commissioned as an officer and retired with rank of Major.    He had three tours of duty: Germany meeting his wife of 43 years, Ellie Zintl Murray; Vietnam where he was an Infantry Company Commander; and Korea on the staff of the Eighth Army and United Nations Command.   The Bronze Star, Meritorious Service medal with oak leaf cluster, and Army Commendation medal with oak leaf cluster were some of the many commendations and awards he received.  After his retirement from military service in 1975, he attended and graduated from Guilford College, Greensboro, NC, with a bachelor of administrative science degree.   He proudly taught high school JROTC at Carver High, Winston Salem, NC, and Goose Creek High, Goose Creek, SC, where he was a mentor for his students and assisted many to enter the military academies and to acquire scholarships to ROTC college programs.  Over the years, he received many accolades from his students and their parents.  Teaching JROTC was one of the most rewarding things in his life.

He is survived by his four children: Jean Custer (Richard), Goldsboro, NC, Raymond Murray, Jr. (Donna), Advance, NC, Pat Carter (David), Advance, NC and Sharon Peele (Eddie), Clayton, NC.  He is also survived by ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sister, Virginia Gill and brothers Fred Murray and Eric Murray all of Raleigh, NC.

He met and married Joyce Crocker Bachman in 2001 whom he has shared a very happy and loving life for 20 years, 10 months, and 11 days until his death.  She has two daughters, Stacey Bachman and Meredith Loy and two granddaughters; and a loving dog "mischievous" Molly Anna Murray.

They resided in Florida from 2001-2007 and traveled throughout the country in their motorhome seeing many interesting sites and meeting many interesting friends. In 2007, they moved to Sun City, Hilton Head, SC.

Reade will be remembered for his love of the Lord, his family, his patriotism, his love of golf and fishing,

A memorial service & burial will be held at The Church of the Cross ,110 Calhoun Street, Bluffton, SC, September 24, 2022, 10:00am, followed by a reception at the Lakehouse Ballroom in Sun City, SC.
