Rebecca C. (Richardson) Standish of Ridgeland, S.C. died peacefully at home on Friday, September 14, 2018, at the age of 89 after 17 years with Vascular Dementia. She was born April 30, 1929 on a farm in Hubert, Georgia to Steve and Nancy Terrell Richardson, who preceded her in death.
“Beck” taught elementary school for 51 years, devoting great love to her students. She embodied southern hospitality and loved to entertain as well as cook for guests. She was supremely friendly and generous. She always had a special affection for minorities, disabled people, as well as children and those less fortunate.
She is survived by a sister, Lois Nan (Richardson) Johnson; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Shuman; two sons, Steve A. Shuman (Sylvia) and Patrick A. Standish (Diane) of Ridgeland; grandsons, Justin D. Shuman (Cathy) and Steve A. Shuman Jr. (Ashley); granddaughters Mandy S. Rustin (Kenny) and Viola Shuman, six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews to include her special nephew Eddie Sherrod; best friends, Diane and Dan Cross and a loving caregiver, Debra Daring Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gunnery Sergeant, Stanley C. Standish, U.S.M.C.; a son, Dana Terrell Shuman; granddaughter, Candy D. Shuman and great grandson, Randy Womble Jr.; her six siblings, Lewis Richardson, Harry Richardson, Horton Richardson, P.S. Richardson and sisters, Janie Sherrod and Evelyn Parker as well as her dear friends Thetis Brown and Patrick J. Vanderhoof.
Beck was never fond of funerals but loved gatherings, a short service will be held at Coosawhatchie Baptist Church on Monday, September 24th at 11:00 am followed by a gathering of family and friends and food. A private burial will take place at Beaufort National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in memory of Rebecca Standish to a charity of your choice.
