Richard "Dick" Louis Marriner

Richard Louis “Dick” Marriner, 83, of Bluffton, South Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 15, 2026.

Dick was born March 30, 1943, in Neptune, New Jersey, to the late Gerald and Carolyn Marriner. He grew up in Freehold, New Jersey, and later made his home in Englishtown, where he and his wife, Elsie, raised their family. Dick and Elsie shared 57 years of marriage, building a life filled with family, laughter, and memories.

Dick proudly served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1965 and also served in the National Guard. He was a hardworking man who spent many years working for Nestlé before retirement. After raising their family in New Jersey, Dick and Elsie retired to Bluffton, South Carolina, where they lived for 23 years. They embraced retirement and remained very active in the Sun City community. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was a member of St. Peter’s in Freehold, New Jersey, and the Church of the Cross in South Carolina. He was also a proud Mason as well as an avid runner and cyclist.

Dick will be remembered for his ability to light up a room with his jokes. He was hardworking, generous, funny, and deeply devoted to the people he loved. Family was the center of his life, and some of the memories they will cherish most include sitting in the garage drinking a beer, golf cart rides with his grandchildren, time under the red maple tree, beach days, NASCAR, trips to the Poconos, visits to the shooting range, meals at Tony’s Diner, and walking and running at Battleground. Throughout the years, Dick also found great companionship in his dogs.

He was affectionately known as “Pop Pop” and “Dork” by his grandchildren, names that reflected the playful and loving relationship he shared with them. Dick is survived by his beloved wife and soulmate, Elsie Marriner; his children, Tara Cullen (Steven Cullen), Shannon Marriner, and Richard Marriner Jr. (Terri Marriner); his sister, Louis Maghan; his grandchildren, Makayla Marriner, Liam Feuster, and Molly Marriner; his step-grandchildren, Nicholas, Ryan, and Ben Lamp and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Carolyn Marriner, and his three older sisters, June Skowrenski, Betty Albrizio, and Shirley Hall.

Above all else, Dick loved his family and was deeply loved in return. He will be remembered for his humor, loyalty, and the countless moments he made special. While his absence will be deeply felt, his family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace and reunited with his angels and beloved dogs.

A memorial mass will be held at The Church of the Cross, 110 Calhoun Street, Bluffton, South Carolina 29910, on September 28th at 2pm. There will be a repass to follow at Fellowship Hall where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate Dick’s life.

A Celebration of Life will also be held in New Jersey at a later date for family and friends to gather, share memories, and celebrate his life.
