Richard Eugene Foster was born on January 17, 1939 in Delaware, Ohio, the 2nd of seven siblings. He was an “Army Brat”, his dad being an Army Colonel. He attended three First grades, spent grades 3-5 in Heidelberg, Germany, and graduated from Ft. Knox High School. After a year at Bellarmine University, he entered the Army and was trained as an Army medic serving in Fulda, Germany, and Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, CO. Married in Columbus, Ohio, he completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and Doctorate courses (no thesis) at The Ohio State University while working as a Surgical Technologist. During this period, his son Drew and daughter Rahn were born. He married his wife Leslie in 1982 and they lived in several places, including Los Gatos and Coarsegold, CA, Columbia, SC, Columbus, Ohio, and Bluffton, SC. He especially enjoyed his time in SC as a Department of Corrections officer and instructor at the Police Academy.
Richard’s lifelong passions were golf (3 holes-in-one), reading and history. He relished his intellectual curiosity and his diehard OSU Buckeye allegiance. More recently, he enjoyed handing out treats to neighborhood dogs from his golf cart.
His strong presence and keen sense of humor will remain a source of strength for his family. His beloved son Drew (Andrea) and grandsons Noah and Elias live in Seattle and trips to spend time with them were a highlight of his life. HIs wife Leslie will experience the absence of his individuality as will her children Brad (( Bekah)) and Richard ((Kellie)) Palmer; grandchildren Ben, Nate, Jonathan, Isla, Gray and Abigail.) Richard's granddaughters Madison and Macy are in the Seattle area as well.
He also leaves behind his siblings Harry (JoAnn), Larry (Peggy), Mary, and Dan (Jennifer) and many nieces and nephews.
Richard passed unexpectedly playing golf with his friends on February 23, 2023. During personal struggles, Richard sought and found strength and hope in, and is now at peace with his Lord and Savior.
A memorial service will be held later this year. We thank God for his life.
