Richard Joseph Ryan 57 died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Bluffton, SC. At his side were his parents, Al and Margaret (Marge) Ryan of Baldwinsville, NY, his beloved son Beau, along with his black lab sidekick, Friday.
Richard was born February 26, 1969 at GAFB, Rome, NY. He grew up in Liverpool, NY attending St. John’s Church and graduating from Liverpool High School in 1987.
In Liverpool, Rich distinguished himself both on and off the field, playing football and lacrosse while excelling academically. A friend once said, “He was as tough as they come—and would run through a wall to help you and the team.” While Rich and his family were proud of his achievements, what mattered most to him were the enduring friendships he built and carried with him throughout his life.
After high school, Rich chose the steeper path, accepting a well-earned appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. There, he continued to excel as a student and lacrosse player and later served as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, flying reconnaissance in the Kiowa Warrior in Korea. Following his military service, Rich earned his MBA from Cornell University’s SC Johnson College of Business, built a successful career at McKinsey & Company, and later co-founded Thayer Bancroft Equity Partners.
Besides his parents and beloved son, Beau, Rich leaves his brother-in-law (more like brother) Bill O’Brien and his cherished nieces, Mackenzie and Regan O’Brien. His Aunt Kathy Lloyd Lewis, Uncle Steve Lloyd, Aunt Judy & Uncle Rick Jablonka and many precious cousins.
Rich is predeceased by his sister, whom he admired and protected fiercely, Christine O’Brien (Ryan) who died in 2024
Throughout the many chapters of his life, Rich’s presence was a constant for those around him. He was a loyal friend, generous with his time, and unwavering in his support of others, especially during times of need. Above all else, Rich was immensely proud of his son. Anyone who knew him knew that Beau was the center of his world. Of all Rich’s accomplishments, his greatest pride was being Beau’s father.
Rich will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, kindness, and the deep love he had for his family and friends.
His funeral and burial will be at West Point United States Military Academy. Date and details to be determined and announced at a later date.
