Richard Clifton Shriner

March 8, 1950 — March 16, 2015

Richard Clifton Shriner, 65, of Bluffton, SC passed away on Monday, March 16, 2015 at his home. He was born in Cleveland, OH on March 8, 1950 to the late Harry Archer and Mary Ellen Wiseley Shriner. He was the sole owner and operator of Rub-Dub Tub Boat Detailing Service established in South Carolina after moving with his wife to Hilton Head Island in 1993 from Pittsburgh, PA. He was an elite amateur marathon runner having run every major US Marathon multiple times over a 30-year time span, including Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Washington, New York and Boston, with a personal best time of 2-hours and 30-minutes. He established and organized the annual Cleveland Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital Benefit Run each year, taking great pride in working with youngsters. His love and exceptional knowledge of all things books, movies and music was exceeded only by his love and caring for his beloved wife and family. With Rich, what you saw is what you got. He was kind and sensitive in all his dealings with others, deliberate, and a man of his word, a plain dealer who delivered on what he promised. He spoke quietly, but whatever he said you could take to the bank. He was a gentle and very thoughtful man, a man of substance and great compassion, and his quick-witted humor surprised not a few and injected many a moment with a bit of levity to lighten an otherwise tense situation. Rich touched many in his short life, and those of us privileged to have known him, no matter how briefly, got his message. With his passing, we all share a great loss, but we can take comfort in the fact that his intended mission has been accomplished. He is survived by his wife, Judith Anne Shriner of Bluffton; his brother, James Shriner (Barb) and his sister, Jane Albert (George) and nieces and nephews, John Tutolo (Vicki), Daniel Tutolo , Ann Denney (Steve), Scott Shriner (Emily), Karen Baker (Chris), Patrick Shriner and Noelle Eibler (Michael). He is predeceased by his brother William Baker Shriner. A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 PM, Sunday, March 29, 2015 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910.
