Robert (“Bob”) McKinnon Griffeth, Jr., 66, died August 17, 2017 in Savannah, GA, due to complications from cancer. Bob was born in Savannah, GA, on May 18, 1951, and was a resident of Bluffton, SC. He graduated from Newberry College in 1973. He was an active member in the 315th Airlift Wing as a C-141 pilot in the United States Air Force from 1973-1987. From 1986-2015, Bob was a commercial airline pilot for Piedmont, US Airways, and American Airlines. He was a longstanding member of the Quiet Birdmen. Bob and his family have lived in Bluffton, SC since 1989 where he was an active hunter, fisherman, and all-around nature enthusiast. Bob is survived by his: wife, Heidi Hess Griffeth (Bluffton, SC); son, Robert Griffeth, III and grandson, Robert Griffeth, IV (Tucson, AZ); son, Simon and Carrie Griffeth (Chicago, IL); son, Aaron and Shelby Avery (Charleston, SC), and grandchildren, Austin, Ashley and Alex, and great-granddaughter, Ana; daughter, Lindsay and Chris Nelson (Athens, GA) and grandchildren, Clifford, Crosby and Conrad; sister, Simone and Wayne MacDonald and niece, Savannah (Bluffton, SC); and sister Roseanne and Alex Freire (Knoxville, TN). He was preceded in death by his parents Robert (“Mack”) McKinnon and Frances Coats Griffeth. The burial will be at Beaufort VA National Cemetery at 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort, SC 29902 on Friday, October 06, 2017 at 1:00 pm.
