Robert Emil Hagman, 85 of Bluffton, SC passed away on Monday, January 17, 2011 at his home. He was born in Columbus, OH on May 15, 1925. He was the son of the late Robert Emil and Laurene Gassman Hagman Sr.He was an Optician and owner of Ohio State Optical Company. He was active in the Optical Industry and received several national achievement awards. He was a past chairman of the American Board of Opticianry. He was member and past president of the Opticians Association of Ohio and the American Opticians Association. He was a certified master in Ophthalmic Optics and coauthored, The Dictionary of Ophthalmic Optics.He was an active participant in the senior Olympics and won gold medals in swimming, bicycle racing and tennis. He was the founding volunteer for the Bargain Station Thrift Shop in Hardeeville, SC. He was a veteran of the United States Navy in World War II. He was a navigator on a VR11 Bomber in the Pacific. He was a retired Naval Reserve Commander.He was a parishioner at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Bluffton.He is survived by his wife, Jackie Hagman of Bluffton; three sons, R. Emil (Karla) Hagman of Powell, OH, Aleister (Nomi) Saunders of Philadelphia, PA and Timothy (Aletia) Saunders of Pittsburgh, PA; two daughters, Linda Hagman of Dublin, OH and Elizabeth (Michael) Caron of Marshall, Michigan; two brothers, Donald (Joanne) Hagman and Thomas (Susan) Hagman all of Columbus, OH; four sisters, Beatrice Elgin, Betty Spencer, Sister Laureen Hagman and Dorothy Shumaker all of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Joseph and Jessica Caron, Benjamin and Brady Hagman, Lev, Atara, Eden, Tynan and Kathryn Saunders. He was predeceased in death by two brothers, Richard and Steven Hagman.A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 333 Fording Island Road, Bluffton at 11:00 am, Friday, January 21, 2011. The family requests memorial gifts be made to the Bargain Station Thrift Shop, 19869 Whyte Hardee Blvd. Hardeeville, SC 29927.Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton, SC is assisting the family with their arrangements.
