Robert Rathvon Hough

July 10, 1922 — February 26, 2014

Robert R. Hough, died on February 26, 2014 at Hospice Savannah. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Lorraine Johnston Hough. He is survived by his three children, Bruce (Susan) Hough of Newark, DE, and Janet Hough and Carol (Steve) Abercrombie of Hardeeville, SC. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kerry (Kristen) and David Shay of Savannah, GA, Kristin Abercrombie of Hardeeville, SC and Jonathan and Elisabeth Hough of Newark, DE. He was born in Washington, D.C. on July 10, 1922 to Edgar and Mary Hough. He graduated from William H. Taft High School in 1940 and went on to study Chemical Engineering at Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia that same year. He interrupted his studies to enlist in the US Army in 1942. During World War II he served with the First Division, 18th Regiment, Company C in the Rhineland Campaign at the Battle of Crucifix (Aachen) and the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. After the war he completed his studies at Drexel, graduating in 1947. After graduation, he went to work for Hercules Powder Company in Wilmington, DE, where he met his future wife, Lorraine Johnston. Bob and Lorraine lived in Delaware, New Jersey and Connecticut before relocating to Columbia, SC in 1964. In Columbia, he worked for Uniroyal, Inc. and was an active member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church. He relocated to Hardeeville, SC in 2010. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Methodist Church in Savannah, GA at 2 PM on February 28, 2014, with interment of his ashes at Lowcountry Memorial Gardens in Bluffton, SC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Palmetto Animal League in Okatie, SC or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank friends, caregivers and health care workers who have helped comfort and care for Bob. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Methodist Church in Savannah, GA at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 28, 2014 with interment of his cremains at Lowcountry Memorial Gardens in Bluffton, SC at a later date.
