Sally Ann (Brown) Dyer, 97, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2024, at her son’s home in Bluffton, South Carolina, surrounded by her devoted children. Born on July 26, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, Sally was the beloved daughter of James and Vivian Brown and sister to Jean Loh, Dick Brown, and Sue Bapst. She grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where she built the family-centered values that guided her life.
Sally was part of the first graduating class from the School of Nursing at Catholic University, where she also met the love of her life, Jack Dyer. They married in 1949 and spent 67 wonderful years together. Jack and Sally raised five children: Teri Potter (Mike), Jim Dyer (Karen Richards), Don Dyer (Pam), Mary Jo Ford (Jim), and John Dyer (Melinda). Sally’s family grew to include 16 grandchildren (10 spouses) and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom were her pride and joy.
After raising her family in Suffern, NY, Sally and Jack retired to Sarasota, Florida, in 1988. There, Sally became an active member of the community, enjoying involvement in the Newcomers Group, Encore Club, and the Fantastics. As a retiree, she dedicated time to volunteer work, especially with Gulf Gate Elementary School and "Our Mother's House" ministry, where her kindness and service left lasting impacts.
Sally was a devoted Catholic and worshipped at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Thomas More, and St. Gregory the Great in Bluffton, SC. Her faith was a central part of her life, offering her strength and purpose.
Sally’s passion was her family, and she remained dedicated to continuing the Brown family traditions. Along with Jack, she enjoyed camping, sailing, crafting, and traveling, creating countless memories filled with adventure and joy. Sally’s love for her family and her deep connection to her roots were at the heart of everything she did.
One of Sally’s final wishes was to live long enough to attend her family reunion in July 2024 and celebrate her 97th birthday. Imagine her 54 family members surrounding her as she cherished time playing games, holding babies, singing, boating, and witnessing the joy of her family united - a memory that will forever be treasured.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jean (Loh), her brother Dick, her husband Jack, her daughter Teri, and her great-grandson Kerrick. She leaves behind a legacy of love, warmth, and service to others that will be remembered by all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on November 23, 2024, in Bluffton, SC, where family and friends will gather to honor the extraordinary life she lived.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sally's memory to Compassus Hospice, "Our Mother's House" ministry or a charity of your choice.
