Samuel Coleman (Sam) Cutshaw

April 16, 1991 — February 16, 2017

Sam Cutshaw, 25, died tragically on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, from injuries he sustained while doing the work he loved. Sam joined Allcare Tree Surgery of Bluffton SC as an arborist in October of 2016. He worked enthusiastically to restore the Hilton Head Island area from damage caused by Hurricane Matthew. He was loved and respected by his fellow employees for his work ethic and enthusiasm, but particularly for the smile he brought to the job each and every day. He was always ready to take on any task.

Sam was born in Oak Ridge, TN, on April 16, 1991, to Richard C. (Rick), and Joanie Coleman Cutshaw. During his brief, adventurous life, he lived in Las Vegas, NV, Mandeville, and Abita Springs, LA, before moving to Greer, SC after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was a 2009 graduate of Riverside High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for three years with A Company 1-36 Infantry Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss Texas, in El Paso. Following his honorable discharge, Sam returned to the Greenville, SC area to pursue his education. He attended Tri-County Technical College near Clemson, where he was named to both the Dean’s and President’s Lists for academic excellence.

Among Sam’s many passionate interests was scuba diving. He became a certified Divemaster through the Eastern Academy of Scuba Diving/PADI, Vero Beach Florida, just prior to moving to Bluffton in October. His dream was to open a dive shop. All who knew him describe him as a man who always lived life to the fullest and on the edge. He was a natural adventurer and thrill-seeker, who had completed a number of mountaineering and swift water rescue courses through The National Outdoor Leadership School.

In addition to his parents, Sam is survived by his sister, Mia Jones Hughey, brother-in-law, Jeff Hughey, niece, Ami Hughey, nephew, Ben Hughey, and wife, Lauren Elizabeth Cutshaw, all of Bluffton, SC, step-brother, Neil Cutshaw, of Louisville, KY, Uncle Andy (Kris), of Powell, TN, and Uncle Larry (Gina) of Jonesborough, TN, as well as a multitude of beloved friends from all over the country. He was predeceased by his paternal grandmother, Lucy Bullen Cutshaw of Greenville, TN, and by his maternal grandparents, Carl and Dot Hardin Coleman of White Pine, TN.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 25th at The Hollow at Paris Mountain, 3403 State Park Rd., Greenville, SC 29609, beginning at 4 p.m. For those who share in our grief, in lieu of flowers, please donate to “Sam’s Song Lives On,” at www.youcaring.com. All Sam ever wanted to be was a hero, and if through his death, his beloved nephew Ben, and his band, can fulfill the dream of recording and dedicating his first album “Omnipresent Sun” to his “Uncle” Sam, at least, in one small way, his death will not have been without meaning. Sam’s song will live on…
