Sheila Gefen

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Sheila Baker Gefen was a woman of intellect, warmth, and creativity who touched the lives of everyone she met. She was 90 years old. A graduate of Jackson College for Women (now Tufts University) with a master's degree in social work from Simmons College, Sheila dedicated her career to helping others as a psychiatric social worker, guiding patients through some of life's most difficult circumstances with compassion and skill. She was a working mother at a time when few women pursued careers outside the home, and in doing so became a powerful role model for her children.

After making Maryland her home for over 35 years, Sheila and her beloved husband, Stan — her partner through life and life's many adventures — retired to South Carolina, where they spent 30 wonderful years together. Stan preceded her in death in November 2025. Shelia was a very social person who cultivated friendships wherever she went. She was active in the Sisterhood of her temples in both Maryland and South Carolina, and served on various committees in her TidePointe community. She had a creative spirit — knitting beautiful scarves, designing jewelry and pottery, and painting note cards with an artist's eye. She co-founded the resident-led craft group "Darn, Yarn" and brought joy to others through her many handmade creations. She also loved to sing and was a proud member of several choirs alongside Stan, including the EbbTides at TidePointe.

She is survived by her children, Lisa Sicilian (John) and Howard (Pauline); her cherished grandson, Jackson; her dear sister, Nancy Baker (Brian Flynn); her nephews Matthew Flynn (Lisa), Daniel Flynn (Mika Cheng) and Peter Flynn (Christine Woll); grandnieces Clara and Iris; and many cousins across the country.
