Stephen H. Podgorski, 83, of Bluffton, formerly of Wilbraham, Massachusetts passed away at home on Sept. 30, 2013 after a hard fought battle with leukemia. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 52 years, Jean; daughter, Lee-Ann Lih of Massapequa, NY, husband, Arthur, and their daughter, Jacquelyn., and his daughter, Stephanie Patten of Hanover, MA husband, Richard, and children, Lillian and Stephen. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Crane of Tamarac, FL, husband Harry.
Stephen was born July 13, 1930 in Albany, NY. He attended Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. He received both bachelors and masters degrees in music from Boston University and was a fellow at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood under conductor Charles Munch. He went on to teach music in Enfield, CT and play trombone in the Springfield Symphony for 26 years. He also served 4 years in the US Air Force, stationed in Alaska.
Upon relocating to Sun City in 2001 he became a member of the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra.
Stephen was an avid photographer and received many awards for his outstanding works. He had a passion for tennis which he played most of his life. He played on several senior USTA teams and played at the USTA Nationals in Dallas, TX and Tucson, AR.
A memorial concert will be held in his honor Sunday Oct. 27th 12:30-2:30pm at The Crazy Crab in Jarvis Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org).
