Steven Alexander Cole

October 31, 1935 — September 28, 2017

Steven Alexander Cole, age 81, resident of Sun City, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2017. The son of Alfred and Jeanette Cole, he was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 31, 1935. Steve is survived by his wife, Betty, sons Jonathan (Angelin) of Austin, Texas and Samuel (Marika) of Short Hills, New Jersey, grandchildren, Benjamin, Ava, Jacob, and Avery, brother Lawrence (Harriet), sister-in-law Barbara Goodstone, and loving dog Jenny. Steve devoted his life to his wife of 52 years, children, grandchildren, and the children of others during his 36 year career in public education, a career that culminated in the position of Superintendent of Schools in South Plainfield, N.J. Steve graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1957. He went on to earn a Masters Degree from New York University and a Doctorate Degree in education from Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y. In 1958, Steve was drafted and volunteered for paratrooper training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division he played on the Division baseball team during the 1959 series. Among Steve’s many interests was baseball having been a semi-pro player who played with and against both former major leaguers and minor leaguers. He also enjoyed movies, detective stories, working out in the gym, and meeting his friends at the dog park each day with the daughter he never had, his dog Jenny. Steve will be forever grateful for the care he received from Dr. Gary Thomas, his staff, the phlebotomists and the marvelous staff of Same Day Surgery at Hilton Head Hospital. A celebration of his life will be held at Riverbend on Saturday, November 4th from 12:30 – 3:30 PM.
