Thaddeus Matthew Bailey, Jr.

Thaddeus Matthew Bailey Jr., 97, passed away at his home on August 16, 2023 at his home.

Thad was born on April 17, 1926 in Ridgeland to the late Thaddeus M. Bailey Sr. and Alma Woods Bailey.  Shortly after high school, Thad was drafted into the US Army and served during World War II in Europe. He was attached to the Regiment 302, 94th Infantry division.

Thad was married to the love of his life, Katie Nell Cooler Bailey, for 76 years. He and Nell continued the family business, oyster and seafood production, which began with Thad’s father in 1925. In addition, Thad grew the best local produce, watermelon and corn; selling his delicious vegetables to all of the low country. Thad was a devout Christian. He was a member of Okatee Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He loved fishing and shrimping, and continued to ride his tractor at 95 years old.

In addition to his loving wife, Thad is survived by two sons, Thaddeus Matthew Bailey III, aka Buddy, (Stephanie) and Michael Craig Bailey (Heidi); grandchildren, Zealy Bailey, Katie Rountree (Ben), Thad Bailey (Jennifer), Erika Gainey (Justin), Joanna Bunton (Scott), Jessica Bailey, Joseph Bailey (Grace) and 14 great-grandchildren. Thad was preceded in death by his infant son and his sister, Mary Bailey Cooler.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 26, 2023 at Ridgeland Cemetery.
