Thomas Dormer Jr.

d. November 16, 2023

Thomas Dormer Jr of Bluffton, SC, passed away on November 16, 2023, at the age of 83 years old.

Tom was born to the late Thomas and Josephine Dormer, who raised their family in the Boston area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Parshall Dormer, in 2018. They both loved living in the Lowcountry of South Carolina since their retirement in 2005.

He attended Northeastern University, where he earned a BS, and then Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned his master’s degree in engineering. In 1967, he married the love of his life, Jean. They would spend more than 50 years together, raising their family in Massachusetts, before heading to Florida, and ultimately, South Carolina. Tom had a successful career in aerospace and worked for Raytheon and Draper Laboratory in the Boston, MA area. He retired as a graphic designer from the Sun Sentinel in South Florida, but that is a whole other story.

He loved his daily crossword puzzle, woodworking, and keeping up with all his Boston sports teams. His biggest passion was his motorhome and all the miles he put on it with Jean at his side. They visited friends, family, and favorite campgrounds. They would go to Florida to see the Red Sox during spring training and often left for months at a time to see all of the country and parts of Canada. They never missed a chance to visit a national park or a beautiful place.

Tom is survived by his children, James Dormer (Pearl); David Dormer (Johannah); Paul Dormer; Mark Dormer(Sara); Barbara Parshall; grandchildren, Nate, Andrea, Ian, Zoe, and Tyson; and his sisters, Betty Dormer and Anne Wentworth.

The family would also like to thank Paul Dormer for his unwavering dedication, love, and advocating for both Tom's & Jean's care.

Tom was passionate about preserving America’s national parks, in lieu of flowers donations in his memory can be made to Rocky Mountain Conservancy, www.rmconservancy.org/join-or-give/donate/ . Their mailing address is Rocky Mountain Conservancy, Attn: Philanthropy, P.O. Box 3100, Estes Park, CO 80517.
