Viola Grace Cassel

June 3, 1921 — July 12, 2011

Viola Grace Cassel, age 90, died Tuesday, July 12, 2011. She lived at the Hawthorne Inn since June 2007 after moving to Hilton Head from Grand Junction, CO. Viola, the youngest of seven siblings, was born June 3, 1921 in Enid, Oklahoma to Joseph and Suzanna Zehr. She met her husband, Roy Howard Cassel before he served in WWII and married him upon his return 5 years later, August 23, 1944. Roy died in February 1966. Viola graduated from St. Anthony School of Nursing in Amarillo, Texas. She worked as a nurse in various hospitals and especially enjoyed pediatrics. She then worked as a school nurse in Grand Junction, Colorado until her retirement thirty years ago. Viola was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church of Grand Junction, CO. Spending time with the Lord and visiting friends and family were her favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed a good bridge game.Viola is survived by 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Her oldest daughter, Ann Tullie and her husband Dick live in Bluffton, SC. Her son James Cassel and wife Sonny reside in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The youngest daughter, Susan Taylor and husband Bill live in Eagle River, Alaska.A memorial service will be held at the Hawthorne Inn, 15 Main Street, Hilton Head at 10am on Monday July 18.
