Viola E. (Pulver) Hoffman

December 1, 1923 — February 20, 2016

Viola E. (Pulver) Hoffman, age 92, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of Madison, CT died Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville, SC. She was born on December 1, 1923 in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of the late Arthur Stevenson Pulver and Julia Peceri Pulver, the second oldest of 5 children. Viola E. Pulver graduated from Draper High School in Schenectady, NY in 1942. During World War II, Viola worked at the General Electric Company Headquarters in Schenectady, NY. On May 15, 1948, Viola married Edward C. Hoffman in Schenectady, who was working in the Engineering Apprentice Program with General Electric Company, which required moving to a new GE location every six months for a period of five years. In 1956, they relocated to Paoli, PA; six years later, Rochester, MI became their home, followed in 1967 with their last GE assignment in Pittsfield, MA. In 1984, they moved to Madison, CT where her husband took a Director of Operations position with Yale University, eventually settling in Bluffton, SC in 2013. Throughout all these transitions, Viola devoted her life to her family and became an active member of her church and PTA; as well as an avid volunteer within her local community and schools. Her talents included gardening, sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting; she was a prolific reader. She loved puzzles, dominos, bingo, playing cards, and many other games. Viola was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Edward C. Hoffman, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Hoffman-Scoggins (Kim) of Bluffton, SC; Caren H. Williams (Peter) of Richmond, MA; and Cynthia L. H. Clifford (Michael) of Hopewell Juction, NY; grandchildren, Dr. Ryan Hoffman Scoggins and Heather Hoffman Hughes (Tom); Michael F. Clifford and Catherine E. Clifford; and great-granddaughter, Evelyn Hoffman Hughes. On the Pulver side of Viola’s family, she was preceded in death by her mother & father; brothers, Leonard, Arthur, and Richard and sister Virginia, all residing in California, where she also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, twelve nieces and nephews, and their families.
