Walter P. Rhodes, Jr., age 78, passed away peacefully Feb 15, 2022 with his loving wife Donna at his side. Walter was born in Cleveland, OH son of the late Walter P. Rhodes and Betty Mather. The family moved to Pittsburgh, PA two years later where Walter grew up, attended Shadyside Academy, where he formed many life-long friendships, and began his career at United States Steel Corp. He met Donna there and the two became best friends and married one year later. They loved to travel - visiting 16 countries - including many favorites multiple times. Walter would plan each trip in meticulous detail for months in advance.
He retired from his position as Comptroller - United States Steel and Carnegie Pension Fund in 2002 and they moved to La Quinta, CA, where they made new friends, enjoyed golf (where he organized and ran his own group) and more travel across the beautiful USA. Seven years later - after extensive research - Walter chose Bluffton, SC - as their new home. He delighted in being with new and old friends - entertaining, cooking for them – and making “waves” with his unique wit and sense of humor. Their little dog Rumours was also an endless source of joy to him. Walter was fun-loving but above all had a big and generous heart and treasured the love and friendship of his family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife Donna of 53 years, Walter is survived by his sister Mary Ann Hicks (Harry) of Vero Beach, FL and Kinnelon, NJ. He was preceded in death by his brother Paul Rhodes of Minneapolis, MN. Also survived by 10 nieces and nephews, and five of Donna’s sisters and brother, who all loved him dearly.
Private Services to be held at Sauls Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to make a gift in Walter’s memory to Bluffton-Jasper Volunteers In Medicine (BJVIM) (PO Box 2653; Bluffton, SC 29910) or an organization of their choice.
