Walter Suprunowicz

February 1, 1932 — March 5, 2022

Walter Suprunowicz, 90, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 5, 2022. Born on February 1, 1932, in Schenectady, New York, he was the son of the late Makary and Ida Piotrowski Suprunowicz.

Walter is remembered as a talented athlete. He was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, where he played basketball with his older brothers, Mack and Dick. In high school, he played varsity basketball for all four years, with a record of 47 wins and only one loss. Walter received a full athletic scholarship to play basketball for Holy Cross University, where he also received his BA. There, Walter participated in four national championship tournaments, including the 1952 NIT, 1953 NCAA, 1954 NIT, and 1955 NIT. His team won the 1954 NIT championship. For his basketball achievements, he was admitted into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame, alongside his two older brothers.

Throughout college, Walter was a member of the ROTC program and, following graduation, served in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant from 1956-1958. After his service, Walter began his career in education, first working for the Scotia School District. He then accepted a position at his alma mater, Mont Pleasant, in the Schenectady City School District, teaching social studies and coaching varsity basketball, golf, and tennis. He also went on to receive his master’s degree in education from Siena College. His career in education spanned over 29 years, and Walter was a beloved teacher and coach.

In retirement, Walter spent his time golfing and fishing - two of his lifelong favorite pastimes. He took advantage of all that North and South Carolina had to offer: the ocean, golf courses, and blue skies. Walter had a love for the Adirondacks, where he enjoyed countless streams, ponds, and lakes.

Walter was a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather, and loyal friend. He is survived by his son, Mark Suprunowicz; his grandson, Matthew Suprunowicz; and his granddaughter, Tara Suprunowicz. His life will be celebrated through a private memorial for his immediate family.
