Walter "Wally Wally" Eugene Sumner

Walter "Wally Wally" Eugene Sumner, 64, of Bluffton, SC, passed on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. He was born April 11, 1958 in Greenwood, SC to the late Leroy Boyd and Jewel Lanford Sumner.

Walter is survived by his loving wife Diane Owens Sumner; two sons, Robbie (Emily) Cooke of Atlanta, GA, and Weston (Patrice) Sumner of New York, NY; daughter, Lila (Juliana pig) of the home; granddaughter, Sloane Elizabeth Cooke; brother, Phillip Sumner of Laurens, SC; sisters, Cathie Taylor of Clinton, SC, and Rosanne Montjoy of Blackville, SC; half-brother, Ray Sherbert of Beaufort, SC; his niece/akin to a daughter, Chelsea Parr of Caldwell, ID; many loving nephews and nieces; and his neighbors and friends he deemed family.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Joe Taylor, with whom he never missed a Heritage or Savannah St. Pat's.

Walter was a 1976 graduate of Woodruff HS, and a member of the track and football teams. He wore #73 at right guard for the Wolverines during their 1975 2A football state championship.

Walter was a self-employed master carpenter who, since 1984, served the Bluffton/Hilton Head area and particularly the Alljoy community. He never hurried, but worked in a methodical manner allowing him to get the most done with the least energy, always aiming for perfection. He was a quiet, gentle man with a loving and giving heart who valued others based on their own hearts. He never met a stranger, his character filling anybody he met with a calmness. He loved the adventure and bounty of the May River, built many a fire, and hosted horseshoe games at his home- The Fiddler House on the corner.

A Lowcountry memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd, Bluffton. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 pm.

An Upstate memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Trinity UMC, 3200 Hwy 92, Enoree, SC 29335. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 pm.
