Warren Vroom passed away peacefully a few days shy of his 90th birthday, but not having missed out on celebrating it with family and caregivers. Russ' early years were spent in Plainfield, NJ where he discovered his love of education, music and the French language. He was a 1954 graduate of Plainfield HS and later the NJ State Teachers College with a BS degree in 1958. Russ served as a Chaplain's Assistant in the U.S. Army in the 1960's in Germany and in the US. He married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Eshleman in 1965 and continued his civilian career as the photographer and Audio/Visual Coordinator for Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield until retirement in 1994. Together, they traveled extensively, enjoyed many concerts at Tanglewood and spent fun times with friends at their Lake Naomi home in the Poconos.
They also enjoyed time in Sun City (Bluffton, SC) by playing golf, celebrating festive occasions and for Russ, playing keyboards whenever called upon. Although he could "play by ear", Russ' collection of a variety of music was extremely wide-ranging. He could provide entertainment for any holiday, religion, culture or music genre! His time as accompanist was often his most enjoyable and even more so when his Barb would sit nearby and listen. Their lives were enhanced by their feline companions, of which there were many over the years.
After Russ survived a serious medical incident, they settled fulltime in Sun City and later Hilton Head Island, SC. His love of photography, music, great food, books and crossword puzzles kept him busy. Russ' recall of movies, jokes and trivia kept his family and friends amazed throughout all his years.
Warren "Russ" was born September 10, 1935 in Plainfield, NJ to Warren C. and Eileen M. Vroom. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife Barbara Eshleman Vroom, PhD, in 2019. He is survived by his sister Joan C. (the late Ed) Hutchinson of Lebanon, NJ and nieces and nephews Susan Eshleman, James (Sue) Eshleman, Jr., Katherine Eshleman and David (Katherine) Hutchinson.
Russ was well-cared for by Michelle "Shelly" Tensley, who provided great friendship and faith for many years. The family would also like to express their deep appreciation to the team at the Broad Creek Care Center and Hospice Care of the Lowcountry (MiraSol Health), who all assisted during his wife's and his decline and in their final days.
Funeral arrangements will be handled by Sauls in Bluffton, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, 7 Plantation Park Drive, Bluffton, SC 29910 (hospicecarelc.org) or to Broad Creek Care Center Employee Fund, 801 Lemon Grass Court, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.
