William Jackson Baker, 86, of Bluffton, SC, husband of Evelyn Jane Baker, formerly of Valparaiso, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at his home. “Bill” was born in Blanket, Texas on January 18, 1930 to the late Charlie Council Baker and Annie Pearl Townsend Baker. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; retired superintendent at Bethlehem Steel Corporation and a charter member of the Lowcountry Presbyterian Church. He loved his family, friends and volunteering for the Rose Hill Property Owners Association. He enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, golf, horseback riding, as well as raising cattle. He walked daily in the park which bears his name. In addition to his wife of 62 years, Bill is survived by his daughter, Lyn Whiteside (Ben) of Bluffton, SC; his son, Jay Baker of Gibson, NC; three grandchildren, Jaclyn and Ben Whiteside and Halea Baker who knew him as “Poppi.” Also, nieces and nephews, Karin & Bobby Crumbling, Judy & Paul Baker, Brenda Stinson, James, Allen and Dennis Horstick. A memorial service will be held at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, Bluffton, SC on Saturday, April 30 at 2:00pm. A reception will immediately follow at the Rose Hill Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Lowcountry Presbyterian Church or American Cancer Society.
