William Edward Dyer

June 18, 1941 — October 16, 2022

William (Bill) Edward Dyer of Bluffton died peacefully at home October 16, 2022.  Bill was born in Syracuse NY, son of William Allan Dyer Jr and Marian Blumer Dyer.  Bill grew up in Indianapolis, IN and was a proud graduate of Shortridge High School.  He was a 1963 graduate of Brown University and a 1965 graduate of the Wharton Business school.

Bill’s business career began with General Foods in White Plains, NY where he held various marketing positions over nine years. He then joined Pet Incorporated where he became president of Old El Paso (in El Paso, TX) at the age of 32. Three years later he moved back to Pet’s headquarters in St. Louis, MO to oversee Pet’s US grocery operations.  After seven years with Pet, Bill returned to New York to become President of Planters Peanuts, a company owned by Standard Brands. Shortly thereafter, he became president of the US food operations of Standard Brands and then a corporate officer of the company.

Bill chose to leave the corporate world in the 80’s and refocused his entrepreneurial energies to consulting a broad spectrum of privately owned companies.

Bill was raised in the shadow of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, started attending the annual Indy 500 race at an early age and attended close to 70 Indy 500 races in his lifetime. When the opportunity arose in 1992 to purchase a marketing company that was dedicated specifically to the business arena of motorsports, he could not resist as long as wife Pam joined the business as it required extensive national and international travel.   Barnes Dyer Marketing married Bill’s corporate business experience with his passion for Indy racing.  That business was sold in 1999 when Bill and Pam decided to retire.  They decided to leave the NYC area and moved to the beautiful Lowcountry in 2000.

Bill was known for his sense of humor, quick wit, generosity, enthusiasm for all sports, reading 2-3 paper newspapers daily cover to cover and an appreciation for Scotch.  He loved to travel, being with friends and family, continually worked on his golf game and in later life became a doting cat owner.

Bill is survived by his wife of close to 33 years, Pamela Thomas Dyer, sons William Edward Dyer Jr of Wilson, WY, Gregory Richard Dyer (wife Lori) of Armonk, NY, grandchildren Cameron Sean McKenney (wife Katherine), William Gregory Dyer, Katherine Cutler Dyer and two great granddaughters, Cathryn Ann McKenney, Hazel Mae McKenney and Bill’s first wife, Judith Cutler Dyer. Brother Allan Hartwell Dyer predeceased Bill in 2012.

A celebration of life will be held at the Colleton River Club on Saturday, Dec 10, 5-8pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Palmetto Animal League, 56 Riverwalk Blvd., Okatie, SC, 29936/palmettoanimalleague.org. or a charity of choice.
