William Daniel Evans of Hilton Head Island passed away quietly on Monday, December 9.  Dan is the youngest of four children of the late Sterling and Crystal Evans of South Charleston, WV.
He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie, his sons Michael Andrew Evans of Redding, CT, Christopher Jay Evans of Boston, MA, and his "girl" Miss Daisy. Â In addition to his wife and his sons, he is survived by his sister Rebecca Bailey of Winston-Salem, NC, his brothers and sisters-in-law Sterling and Freda Evans of Saint Albans, WV and Robert and Kay Evans of Plano, TX; his wife's sisters and brothers-in-law Marie and Robert Hill of Huntsville, Al and Toni and Paul Ryan of Mamaroneck, NY. Â Â He also leaves his nieces D'Ann Hershel, Lynn Bailey, Kim Toothman and nephews Ted Evans, Jack Hershel, and Christopher Ryan. Â He leaves many friends both old and new who provided endless support to both Dan and Bonnie during his long illness. Â
Dan graduated from Marshall University in Huntington, WV with a degree in Psychology. Â He went on to earn a Masters Degree in Human Resources. Â Following college, he served in the military during the Vietnam War. Â His career spanned 31 years with Xerox Corporation. Â Dan began working for Xerox in 1965 and held positions of increasing responsibility in various divisions in the Northeast and Mid-west. Â He retired in 1996 as the Vice President of Human Resources for the Xerox Publishing Group in Stamford, Ct. Â Â He and Bonnie then moved to Hilton Head where they have made their home since then.
Dan was a kind, thoughtful man who loved family, books, music, walks with Daisy, dancing with his wife and the company of good friends. Â Prior to retirement, he helped develop the vision for the University of Connecticut campus in Stamford, CT and served on a select committee who supported the development of The Stamford Center for the Arts. Â He was a founding member of the Life Purposes Foundation of Hilton Head Island, served on various committees at St. Andrew by the Sea United Methodist Church, developed and taught a course in Personnel Administration at Webster University and tutored young students. Â His passion for books was reflected in his extensive home library and in the 10+ years he owned The Bookmeister Used Books in Savannah, GA. Â Â
Visitation will be at Sauls Funeral Home in Bluffton from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 19. Â A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew by the Sea United Methodist Church in Hilton Head in January.
Dan's parents were teachers who began their careers teaching in one-room school houses in rural WV.   Dan established a scholarship fund in their honor for WV students who are majoring in education.  It's the family's wish that instead of flowers any memorial donations family and friends wish to make be made to either the Sterling & Crystal Evans Memorial Scholarship (Marshall University Foundation, 519 John Marshall Drive, Huntington, WV 25703 with checks made out to "MU Foundation" and fund #610152 and name of the scholarship on memo line) or to Memory Matters (P.O. 22330, Hilton Head Island, SC  29925 with notation In Memory of Dan Evans on memo line).  Â
