Alfred “Al” Burfeind

November 6, 2021

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina – Alfred “Al” Finley Burfeind passed away peacefully on November 6, 2021 at The Preston Health Center at the age of 82.

Al was born on October 16, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA.  He was the son of the late Alfred George Burfeind and Esta Finley Burfeind.  Al’s wife, Judith “Judy” Kohler Burfeind predeceased him in 2008 after 46 years of marriage.  Al is survived by his four children Sheryl “Sherry” Burfeind Del Giorno (Mark) of Venice, FL, Debra Lynne Hufnagel (the late Raymond Jr.) of Hilton Head Island, SC, Robert “Bruce” Burfeind (Lisa) of Jacksonville, FL and Thomas “Scott” Burfeind of Columbia, MD.  He is also survived by 18 grandchildren:  Jacqueline, Laura, Allison, Megan, Michael, Colleen, Ryan, Taryn, Kimberly, Kendall, Christian, Lily, Cory, Harley, Taylor, Madison, Thomas, and Reagan and 5 great grandchildren: Hudson, Luke, Graham, Anna and Micah as well as his brothers, William Richard Burfeind (Kristine) of Allentown, PA and Donald Robert Burfeind (Joanne) of Carmel, IN.

Al received his Masters and Bachelors in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University and was a proud brother of the Fraternity Gamma Phi Delta.  He also played varsity soccer and tennis for Lehigh.  Al worked in human resources and management consulting for Eastman Kodak, Arthur Young, Fannie Mae and GE Capital.  He and his wife Judy, after several years of multi state moves, settled in Potomac, Maryland. They were active in Regency Estates Swim Club, coaching youth soccer and organizing the annual community Santa parade and food drive each December.  Al retired in 1995 and settled in Sun City Hilton Head, SC where he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, bridge and entertaining with Judy.    Al enjoyed volunteering for his Sun City Community in many capacities.  He also volunteered with his beloved toy poodle, Cinnamon, as a therapy dog owner for Low Country Hospice.  He was a member of Lowcountry Presbyterian church and was an elder.

Al loved his family and especially enjoyed watching his kids and grandchildren play sports.  He also enjoyed his yearly trips to OCNJ with family, chair surfing with his grandkids and beating them in a game of hearts.  Al was an avid “Washington” football and Phillies baseball fan.

There will be a memorial service honoring the life of Al Burfeind on Saturday, November 13 at 11:30 am at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, 10 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC.
